Mayor Auto Builder Eyeing The Upstate For A New Plant Location
Volvo has consulted with officials in three states, including South Carolina, as it mulls longstanding plans to build a U.S. car plant, according to a report in a British newspaper.
The Financial Times reported that the Sweden-based and Chinese-owned carmaker has recently been in talks with legislatures in both Carolinas and Kentucky about available incentives.
A U.S.-based spokesman for Volvo said he wouldn't comment on "speculation."
The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the matter," said Volvo has tasked its new Americas chief, Lex Kerssemakers, with establishing a U.S. manufacturing presence to arrest a decline in U.S. sales and as a way to hedge against currency fluctuations.
It said Volvo was looking to the examples of BMW, which makes cars in Greer, and Mercedes, which operates a plant in Alabama.
Dean Shaw, vice president of corporate communications for Volvo Cars of North America in Rockleigh, New Jersey, declined to comment on the report.
"I'm sorry but we cannot comment on speculation," he told The Greenville News in an email.
Allison Skipper, spokeswoman for the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the state agency that handles industrial recruitment, likewise declined comment.
South Carolina Rep. Brian White, an Anderson Republican who chairs the Ways and Means Committee, said he hadn't heard the report.
"They haven't spoken with me," White said.
