Little Know Facts About South Carolina

I recently ran across an article about little known facts about our fine state of South Carolina. I thought I’d share a couple of them with you. There are even a few that a true South Carolinian like myself didn’t know!

  • The Angel Oak Tree on John’s Island is thought to be more than 1500 years old!

  • South Carolina produces more peaches than any other state in the nation, except California!

  • The worlds’ smallest police station is located in Ridgeway. It’s about the size of a toll booth and was operational from 1940-1990!

  • You have to have a permit to be a fortune teller in the state of SC!

  • Charleston is the birthplace of the game of golf!

  • Bowman is home to a UFO Welcome Center.

  • Mt. PleImage titleasant is the only modern suburb where Sweetgrass basketry is still practiced.

  • The Godfather of Soul, James Brown was born in Barnwell, SC.

  • South Carolina has to lowest percentage of women in it’s State Legislature.

  • The Palmetto State is home to more than 300 golf courses and Myrtle Beach is the unofficial Golf Capital of the world!

  • Strom Thurmond was the only US Senator ever elected as a write-in candidate. He was elected on November 2, 1954 with 139,106 votes!

  • The Palmetto State was once known as the Iodine State.

  • South Carolina operates and owns it’s own school bus fleet. And is the only state to do so.

  • Charleston was the birthplace of the first museum, public college and playhouse.

  • “The Notebook”, “Full Metal Jacket”, “Prince of Tides”, Sleeping With The Enemy” and “Swamp Thing” were all filmed in the Palmetto State!

  • Summerville is the birthplace of Sweet Tea and even boost a Sweet Tea Trail!

  • Brookgreen Gardens in Murrell’s Inlet is home to the largest collection of outdoor sculptures.
